Microsoft has released the latest version of Visual Studio, which they claim will revolutionize the way modern applications are programmed
Microsoft announced the launch of the latest version of its flagship integrated development environment, Visual Studio 2012. We had an interaction with Pratima Amonkar(Director,Audience Marketing,Microsoft) who spoke more in detail about the product. According to Amonkar, a development solution needs to be robust to “support modern development practices” and “different form factors, different standards”. She also emphasized that “software delivery lifecycle is becoming continuous”, and claims that Visual Studio 2012 will satisfy all of those needs.
Since the Windows Phone 8 SDK was also released for preview on September 12th, we asked if it would be easy for developers to develop apps which run on both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Amonkar replied saying “To port an app over to Windows Phone 8, developers can retain the logic layer of their code and just need to change the presentation layer to optimize it for a Windows Phone. So the core technology is the same”.
She added that “Indian development houses are amongst the largest consumer of Microsoft Tools”, so Microsoft has heeded their feedback and improved Visual Studio dramatically to suit their needs for modern app development. “We’re the only company to provide an end-to-end product, from design, coding, testing to management in production environments”, she said.
We also had the opportunity to Naresh Choudhary (Head-Infosys Tools Group), who outlined some of the benefits Infosys developers had found from Visual Studio 2012. Choudhary said that “code reviews and code quality”, as well as the “ability to detect duplicate code, understand patterns and refactor effectively”, were defining benefits of VS 2012. Choudhary also claimed that the new testing features, including “the ability to run tests in background and multi-task within Visual Studio”, was also something that Infosys developers found was a welcome addition.
Visual Studio 2012 express, is a free version available for independent developers who wish to develop apps for new Windows 8 Platform. Download it here.
